How To Manage Raw Emotions Effectively

By Larry Murphy

A single act or person will ruin a day that appeared so bright and promising. The resulting raw emotions cause you to say words or act in a way that you regret in future. According to experts, you must find a way of managing these feelings else you will regret for the rest of your life. What can you do to keep these feelings in check?

Take a deep breath and rethink your actions. This will buy you the few precious seconds that make a difference between a regrettable act and saving the situation. The breath helps you refocus and avoid injuries, insults or damage to property. You reconsider your action and therefore avoid a catastrophic end.

Think for a minute like the person with whom you are angry. Put yourself in his or her shoes and his or her action will become clear. You find justification or explanation for the action that he or she has taken. This does not mean that the action is right but rather allows you to have a 360 degrees view of the situation. You will realize that you would have acted in the same way if you were in his or her shoes.

Leave the scene. Remaining at the scene or seeing the perpetrator of the atrocious event took place makes a person angrier. Take a break from the person and entire scenario. It will save you from taking a drastic step that you will regret later. It will also help you think of a better solution other than anger and quick reaction.

Master your thoughts. Any action you take and the feelings that persist will depend on what is going on in your mind. Control the ideas that are being digested on your mind. Avoid being negative. Find a solution as fast as possible. Stop any negative thought whenever it crops up. Such an action will prevent you from acting in a way that you will regret in future.

Adapt controlled behavior or reaction to a situation. Controlled behavior or action can be attributed to the character of a person. It means that you have developed a way of dealing with similar situations. You are required to act as the bigger person in the circumstance. This remains the only way to make a reasonable decision.

Highlight the feeling, acknowledge that it exists and accept that it is consuming you. This can be regarded as the highest form of consciousness. You are fully aware of the situation and how it is making you to react. Since you are conscious, you will have better control of the reaction. This helps you to avoid acting negatively and later regretting the step you take.

Engage in self-soothing acts. These acts are unique to each individual. While some people hum tunes they are fond of, others will stroll outside. Other self-soothing acts include gazing at the horizon, tapping the desk and talking to a friend. It is a way of deflecting the negative energy and buying time so as to avoid a nasty reaction. It shields you from regrettable actions in future.

Lean on a reliable support system. Everyone has a person he or she calls or talks to at home, work, or in the community whenever things go wrong. Place that call or go to see the person. A little dialogue or even seeing the person will calm you down and make even the worst situation manageable.
